Book Excerpts

Gary James Bergera
"1911 Evolution Controversy at Brigham Young University"
In 1911, as a result of BYU's attempt to raise their academic standards, the subjects of evolution and biblical criticism were introduced into Brigham Young University's curriculum, which in turn created a backlash that adversely effected BYU for years to come. This is an excellent look into how dogmatism can potentially undermine academic freedom and education.

"Official Statements on the Subject of Evolution From the First Presidency of the LDS Church"
It's common for many Latter-day Saints to believe that the LDS Church is against Evolution—particularly in light of the many statements made by prominent conservative leaders of the Church, such as President Joseph Fielding Smith, and his son-in-law Elder Bruce R. McConkie. However, the LDS Church has only issued two official statements regarding the subject of Evolution, both of which are rather ambiguous about whether Evolution is accepted or not. Here is a reprint of both the 1909 statement and the 1925 statement.
Horace Hall Cummings
"False Doctrines In Church Schools"
Horace Hall Cummings was General Superintendent of Church Schools during the 1911 evolution/biblical criticism controversy at BYU. This is an excerpt from his autobiography that details that controversy from his point of view.
